Summer Visitors

Some of the butterflies and moths seen in the Enchanted Woodland are summer visitors from far away.

The Red Admiral, Clouded Yellow, Painted Lady butterflies and the Hummingbird Hawk moth arrive in the Spring from their wintering grounds in Mediterranean countries and beyond.

Hitchhikers

Butterflies and insects hitch a lift on high fast tailwinds to cover the thousands of miles of their migration in super quick time - much faster than birds. It's amazing that such small delicate insects can search out winds in a favourable direction and then travel along them at speeds of up to 100km per hour.

It is estimated that over two billion insects are involved in annual migrations to and from the UK.
